Room 1 of 20

Galatians 1:8

Another gospel

Verse

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Why they use it

They say Moroni — or Joseph — is Paul’s accursed angel, because the Restoration is “another gospel.”

Why they are wrong

Paul is cursing a gospel contrary to the one he already preached — not an angel who preaches that same Christ.

Translation note

Greek: euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον)

the good news already preached — not ‘anything an angel says’

The curse is on a contrary euangelion. Compare the content. If Moroni’s message is faith in Christ, repentance, baptism, and the Holy Ghost, Paul is not cursing that. He is cursing a gospel that replaces grace with the law.

The room (aka the context)

Who wrote it
Paul.
Who is in the room
The churches of Galatia — Gentile converts.
Who is speaking
Paul. He includes himself: “though we, or an angel.”
What is going on
Teachers have arrived saying these Gentiles must take Moses’ fence (circumcision, the law) to belong. Paul is furious that they are “so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ” (1:6).
What they already believe
The gospel they received from Paul is Christ crucified — grace, not a second law as the terms of membership.
How they would hear these words
“Another gospel” means a different terms-of-belonging than the one Paul already delivered. It does not mean “no later messenger may preach Christ.” He even names an angel as a hypothetical, because the test is the message, not the messenger.

Clarifying verse

Revelation 14:6

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

John’s canon still has an angel carrying the everlasting gospel to the whole earth. If Galatians banned angels with good news, Revelation would have to go.
