Room 10 of 20
Hebrews 1:1–2
Spoken by the Son
Verse
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Why they use it
They say God has spoken by His Son — so prophets after Jesus are impostors.
Why they are wrong
“Hath spoken by his Son” is not “and then He went mute.”
The room (aka the context)
- Who wrote it
- The preacher to the Hebrews.
- Who is in the room
- Jewish Christians tempted to shrink back to the old order.
- Who is speaking
- A Christian teacher putting the Son above angels and Moses.
- What is going on
- The point is the Son’s supremacy, not a press release that prophecy is over. The same New Testament still gifts apostles and prophets until we all come to a unity of the faith (Eph 4).
- What they already believe
- God has now spoken in a Son. That is better than angels. It is not “no more servants.”
- How they would hear these words
- Last days speech in the Son. If that cancelled prophets, Amos 3:7 is a lie, and Ephesians 4 is unemployed.
Clarifying verse
Amos 3:7
Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
God’s pattern is prophets. Hebrews does not repeal it. FAIR’s living-prophets answers treat Hebrews 1 as Christ’s supremacy, not a closed mouth.
