Room 20 of 20
John 10:16
Other sheep
Verse
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
Why they use it
They say “other sheep” are just Gentiles in the Old World — Jesus would never visit the Americas.
Why they are wrong
He said they will hear His voice — not merely hear a sermon about Him. That is a visit.
The room (aka the context)
- Who wrote it
- John.
- Who is in the room
- Jews in Judea.
- Who is speaking
- Jesus, the good shepherd discourse.
- What is going on
- He has sheep in this fold. He has other sheep. They will hear *His* voice. In 3 Nephi He tells the Nephites: you are they. He also says the people in Judea assumed Gentiles — and they were wrong, because Gentiles would be converted through preaching, not by hearing His voice in person.
- What they already believe
- Messiah gathers Israel. Lost tribes are still His.
- How they would hear these words
- Other sheep, not this fold, will hear His voice. That is not “the Gentile mission in Acts,” which is preaching *about* Him. Scripture Central: He told the Nephites the Judeans guessed Gentiles and missed it.
Clarifying verse
3 Nephi 15:21–22
And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold… And they understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their preaching.
Jesus explains His own sentence. The other sheep hear Him. Gentiles hear preaching. Scripture Central’s KnoWhy on John 10:16 is the write-up.
