Room 5 of 20
Revelation 22:18
Do not add
Verse
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Why they use it
They say you cannot add scripture after the Bible — “this book” means the whole canon.
Why they are wrong
“This book” is Revelation — not the library that wasn’t bound yet.
Translation note
Greek: biblion (βιβλίον)
this scroll — the prophecy you just heard
John says “the prophecy of this book,” twice. Howard W. Hunter, April 1981: the warning is on Revelation, not the whole Bible.
The room (aka the context)
- Who wrote it
- John, on Patmos.
- Who is in the room
- The seven churches. Hearers of *this* prophecy.
- Who is speaking
- John, sealing his apocalypse.
- What is going on
- He is finishing one scroll. The New Testament as a table of contents does not exist. Moses already said the same thing in Deuteronomy — and then God kept speaking.
- What they already believe
- You do not vandalize a prophet’s book. That is not “God may never speak again.”
- How they would hear these words
- Don’t add to the plagues written in *this* book. If the line closed the canon, Deuteronomy closed it first, and you have no New Testament.
Clarifying verse
Deuteronomy 4:2
Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Same warning, centuries earlier. If it closed the canon, throw out Joshua through Revelation. FAIR’s *To Add To or To Take From* starts here.
