The Gates of Hell

Doesn’t Matthew 16:18 prove the church could never fall — so a Restoration is already a lie?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Matthew 16:18

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

NRSVUE

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

Our explanation

They hear ‘the church never died.’ The verse is about Hades — the realm of the dead — not getting the last word. You only face those gates if you die.

How we read it

They hear ‘the church never died.’ The verse is about Hades — the realm of the dead — not getting the last word. You only face those gates if you die. Keep reading. The rest of the Bible is still in the room.

The Bible answers

Bible · Acts 2:27, 31

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. … He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

NRSVUE

For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption. … Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, ‘He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.’

Our explanation

Jesus’ soul was not left in Hades. He died, He went, He rose. That is what ‘did not prevail’ looks like.

Bible · Revelation 1:18

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

NRSVUE

and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever, and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.

Our explanation

He was dead, and is alive, and holds the keys of Death and Hades. Keys come after the grave, not instead of it.

Bible · Matthew 16:19

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

NRSVUE

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Our explanation

The next breath is keys. D&C 128 reads this as power for the dead as well as the living — storming those gates.

Bible · 2 Thessalonians 2:3

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

NRSVUE

Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction.

Our explanation

A falling away first. Paul expected a death. Matthew 16:18 is the promise it would not be the ending.

Bible · 1 Corinthians 15:55

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

NRSVUE

Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?

Our explanation

O grave, where is thy victory? Prevail is about who gets Sunday. Restoration is Sunday for the church.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 138:16–19

There were gathered together in one place an innumerable company of the spirits of the just… They were filled with joy and gladness, and were rejoicing together because the day of their deliverance was at hand. They were assembled awaiting the advent of the Son of God into the spirit world, to declare their redemption from the bands of death.

Our explanation

He went to the spirits in prison. Hades met Him. It did not keep Him.

Doctrine and Covenants 110:11–16

Moses appeared… Elias appeared… After this vision had closed, another great and glorious vision burst upon us; for Elijah the prophet, who was taken to heaven without tasting death, stood before us, and said: … the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands.

Our explanation

Keys back on the earth. That is the resurrection of the church.

Doctrine and Covenants 128:10–11

And again, for the precedent, Matthew 16:18, 19… Whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Now the great and grand secret of the whole matter… consists in obtaining the powers of the Holy Priesthood. For him to whom these keys are given there is no difficulty in obtaining a knowledge of facts in relation to the salvation of the children of men, both as well for the dead as for the living.

Our explanation

Joseph cites Matthew 16:18–19 for work for the dead. The gates are the point of the keys.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Apostles’ Creed — ‘He descended into hell’ (ad inferos / Hades)

Creedal Christians already confess that Jesus entered the realm of the dead and came out. Hades did not have the last word over Him. That is the grammar of Matthew 16:18.

If ‘shall not prevail’ meant ‘will never die,’ the Creed would be impossible. He died. He went. He rose. Prevail is about the ending, not about skipping the grave.

FAIR

Do the gates of hell prove the church never needed restoring?

FAIR Latter-day Saints

KJV ‘hell’ here is Hades — the holding place of the dead — not the lake of fire and not ‘Satan’s army.’ Gates are a city’s defense. They do not march. They hold prisoners in. Jesus promises that those gates will not katischysousin: they will not overpower, will not get the lasting victory, will not have the last word against His church. You only stand in front of those gates if you have died. Jesus did (Acts 2:27, 31). He took the keys (Revelation 1:18). If the church was never going to die, the promise is a solution to a problem He said would not exist — and 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (a falling away first) becomes a wasted verse. Restoration is the resurrection of the church: death, Hades, then keys back on the earth. That is how the gates did not prevail. Finality is the point. They did not win.

Prevail is about the ending. Hades had Friday. It did not have Sunday. The apostasy had centuries. It does not have the last word.

  • Hades, not Gehenna. Realm of the dead, not a cartoon devil charging a chapel.
  • Gates hold the dead in. The promise is release, not uninterrupted occupancy of a building.
  • Katischuō: overpower, be too strong, have the lasting victory. A restored church is empirical proof they did not.
  • Jesus’ own path is the template: die, enter Hades, rise with keys. The church walked the same road.
  • The next verse is keys (16:19). D&C 128 reads 16:18–19 as binding for the dead as well as the living — storming those gates.

A Voice of Warning (1837)

The gospel taken — and given again

Parley P. Pratt

Pratt’s case is the same shape as Easter. The original church had apostles, gifts, and keys. Later ages kept a form and lost the power. Taking the gospel from the earth is a death. Giving it again is a resurrection. Matthew 16:18 is not a lock on the fourth century. It is a promise that death does not get to keep what Christ built. If Hades prevailing meant ‘never a gap,’ Paul would not have warned of a falling away, and Jesus would not have needed keys of death and Hades — He would have needed a facilities manager.

The same Lord who gave it can give it again. That is not hatred of Christians. That is faith that the grave is not the last word — for a man, or for a church.

  • A church that cannot die does not need a promise against the gates of the dead.
  • Restoration is how the promise is kept, not how it is broken.
  • Keys returning (D&C 110) is Sunday morning for the ekklēsia.
