Objection 17 of 21

Changing doctrine

Acts 15 changed practice. Living prophets can too. The Atonement did not get rewritten. Policy is not the Messiah.

The objection

You change scriptures and doctrines — polygamy, race, Book of Mormon wording, temple rites. That’s not revelation. That’s PR.

  • What they say

“Joseph rewrote revelations. You edited the Book of Mormon. The temple keeps changing.”

From the Bible

They say

God doesn’t change. Your church does, so it isn’t His.

Acts 15: Gentiles and the law — a massive policy change under living apostles. ‘It seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us.’ That is Official Declaration grammar. Isaiah 28:10: line upon line. A frozen 1830 is not how Israel ever lived. They call their councils the Spirit. They call ours politics.

  • Acts 15:28–29

KJV · For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things.

NRSVUE · For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further burden than these essentials.

From the Book of Mormon

They say

You edited the Book of Mormon to hide racism.

Royal Skousen’s work: most changes are grammar and clarification. ‘White and delightsome’ → ‘pure’ was Joseph in 1840. That is a prophet telling you how to read, not a cover-up. D&C 1:24–28 already said the commandments came in weakness, after the manner of their language, and errors would be made known.

  • 2 Nephi 30:6

They shall be a pure and a delightsome people.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 1:24–28

These commandments… were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language… And inasmuch as they erred it might be made known.

From modern revelation

They say

Polygamy ended and the priesthood ban ended because of pressure.

Official Declarations 1 and 2 are canonized course-corrections. Temple presentation can be taught more clearly without changing the covenants. Word of Wisdom tightened over time — like kosher and the Sabbath. Policy is not the Messiah. The Atonement did not get rewritten.

  • Official Declaration 1

We are not teaching polygamy or plural marriage, nor permitting any person to enter into its practice.

From faithful sources

They say

Mormonr’s temple-change list proves it is man-made.

Mormonr is documents. We take the documents. We write the conclusion: living apostles can still say ‘it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us.’ Acts 15 already did. Use Gospel Topics on revelation, then the two Official Declarations.

From Preach My Gospel

Chapter 1 — Living prophets

“We follow living prophets. The Lord directs His Church today.”

If they say ‘you changed’: ‘Acts 15 changed. Living apostles still can. Jesus did not change. Polygamy ended by revelation. The priesthood restriction ended by revelation. That is a feature of a living church.’
