Objection 18 of 21

Only true church / priesthood authority

Keys, not a claim that your neighbor is going to hell. D&C 1 already says collectively, not individually.

The objection

You say only your church has authority and everyone else is apostate. That’s arrogant.

  • They quote · Ephesians 4:5

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

  • What they say

“So my pastor’s baptisms don’t count?”

From the Bible

They say

Priesthood authority does not matter. Jesus is enough. Your keys are arrogant.

Ephesians 4: apostles and prophets until we all come to the unity of the faith. Hebrews 5:4: no man takes this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. Authority was always conferred, not assumed. Other churches have truth. They do not have the keys the New Testament assumes.

  • Ephesians 4:11–13

KJV · He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets… till we all come in the unity of the faith.

NRSVUE · The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets… until all of us come to the unity of the faith.

  • Hebrews 5:4

KJV · And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

NRSVUE · And one does not presume to take this honor but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

From the Book of Mormon

They say

Calling it His church doesn’t make it His church.

3 Nephi 27:8: if a church is called in His name and built on His gospel, it is His church. 3 Nephi 11–12: Jesus organizes, gives power, and teaches baptism by those with authority. That is the New Testament pattern restored.

  • 3 Nephi 27:8

And how be it my church save it be called in my name? … if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.

From modern revelation

They say

D&C 1:30 is the most arrogant sentence in religion.

Read the next clause: collectively, not individually. Article of Faith 13: we claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God… and allow all men the same privilege. Keys, not a claim that your neighbor is going to hell. Lesson 1: John the Baptist, then Peter, James, and John.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 1:30

The only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually.

From faithful sources

They say

Every church thinks it’s the true one.

Ask how many churches will accept our baptism without repeating it. The Catholic Church already teaches there is no salvation outside the Church. Many Baptists rebaptize. Authority is either conferred by God or it is not. FAIR: keys can be restored only if they can be lost.

From Preach My Gospel

Lesson 1 — Restoration of the priesthood

“Priesthood authority was restored by John the Baptist and by Peter, James, and John. The Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth again.”

Teach the restoration of priesthood as a gift, not a slam. ‘Your pastor may love Jesus. We also claim angels restored the authority Jesus gave the Twelve.’
