Room 18 of 20
Matthew 22:30
Neither marry
Verse
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
Why they use it
They say no marriage in the resurrection, so eternal marriage is false.
Why they are wrong
Jesus is answering Sadducees who deny resurrection, not sealing a doctrine against eternal marriage.
The room (aka the context)
- Who wrote it
- Matthew.
- Who is in the room
- Sadducees. Verse 23 says they say there is no resurrection.
- Who is speaking
- Jesus.
- What is going on
- Seven brothers, one wife, whose is she? It is a gotcha about Levirate duty under Moses, aimed at mocking resurrection. Jesus answers *their* case: people who only marry for this world do not carry that contract through the veil by default.
- What they already believe
- No resurrection. No angels. The question is a trap, not a theology of sealing.
- How they would hear these words
- In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage — present tense of the ceremony, not “no marriages exist.” D&C 132 uses the same sentence for covenants that were only till death.
Clarifying verse
Doctrine and Covenants 132:15–16
Therefore, if a man marry him a wife in the world, and he marry her not by me nor by my word… their covenant and marriage are not of force when they are dead… Therefore, when they are out of the world they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are appointed angels in heaven.
The Restoration uses Jesus’ own sentence for marriages not made by Him. FAIR: the Sadducees’ wives were not sealed; the verb is the wedding, not the eternal state of all unions.
