Matthew 22 — No Marrying in Heaven?

Jesus said in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage. Doesn’t that kill eternal marriage?

The Bible answers

Bible · Matthew 22:28–32

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven?… For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven… God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

NRSVUE

In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be?… For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven… He is God not of the dead but of the living.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 132:15–19

Marriages ‘until death’ end at death. Covenants sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise are not that kind of contract.

Our explanation

Unsealed marriages end. The ones God binds do not.

Eternal marriage and Matthew 22

FAIR Latter-day Saints

The Sadducees’ woman is a legal puzzle under Moses, not a temple sealing. Jesus refuses their premise. ‘Neither marry nor are given’ is about the act of marrying in that world, not the erasure of every family God has bound. If marriage is only for mortality, why is the first not-good in Genesis that the man is alone?

He silenced Sadducees who thought resurrection was a joke. He did not silence every sealed family.

  • Mark 12 and Luke 20 are the same fight: resurrection, not a handbook on sealings.
  • Angels in that saying are a status comparison for people who die without the covenant, not a ceiling on exaltation.
  • Isaiah’s joy of a bridegroom and Revelation’s marriage supper are still in the Bible.
