Church Finances and Reserves

Why does the Church hold large financial reserves, and is that a betrayal of sacred tithing?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Matthew 25:21

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

NRSVUE

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things; I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’

Bible · Proverbs 21:20

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

NRSVUE

Precious treasure remains in the house of the wise, but the fool swallows it.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 104:11–13

It is wisdom in me; therefore, a commandment I give unto you, that ye shall organize yourselves and appoint every man his stewardship; That every man may give an account unto me of the stewardship which is appointed unto him. For it is expedient that I, the Lord, should make every man accountable, as a steward over earthly blessings, which I have made and prepared for my creatures.

Doctrine and Covenants 119:4

And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Genesis 41:34–36 (Joseph’s storehouses)

Let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine.

The Bible’s model of sacred finance is not annual exhaustion of the treasury. It is faithful gathering against famine. Critics who call a reserve ‘hoarding’ are asking the Church to be the foolish servant of the parable, not Joseph in Egypt.

Tithing and the Church’s mission

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Sacred funds pay for temples, chapels, missionary work, family history, education, and aid. A growing, global church that intends to be here until the Lord comes must not spend every year’s tithe in the same year. Reserves and invested assets exist to perpetuate that mission. They are not an indictment of tithing; they are what tithing looks like when it is treated as holy and not as a campaign budget.

Tithing is the Lord’s law of finance for His Church. The funds are used to further the work of the Lord, not to enrich leaders.

  • Tithing is sacred. Treating it as a journalist’s story about ‘wealth’ already misses the doctrine.
  • A reserve is for the mission: temples, humanitarian work, education, and continuity.
  • Local bishops and Relief Society presidents are unpaid. That is not the profile of a prosperity cult.
  • Stewardship includes investing, accounting, and saying no to fads.

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Headlines about investment returns are written as if prudence were a scandal. The same critics would condemn the Church if a recession closed temples and humanitarian channels for lack of savings. The biblical pattern is storehouses, tithes, and faithful servants. The Restoration follows it. Opacity in some jurisdictions is not the same as embezzlement, and U.S. nonprofit law is not a revelation that the Brethren have betrayed Malachi.

A church that pays for thousands of meetinghouses and temples without passing a plate each week is not hiding from the New Testament. It is practicing it at scale.

  • Compare like with like: other global churches also hold endowments and property.
  • The charge that ‘tithing bought stocks instead of the poor’ ignores actual humanitarian, educational, and building expenditures.
