Temple Garments and Modesty

Are temple garments a bizarre Mormon underwear test, or a biblical pattern of sacred clothing and covenant memory?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Exodus 28:2–4

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty. And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office. And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle.

NRSVUE

You shall make sacred vestments for your brother Aaron, for glory and for beauty. You shall speak to all who have ability, whom I have endowed with skill, that they make Aaron’s vestments to consecrate him for my priesthood. These are the vestments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a checkered tunic, a turban, and a sash.

Bible · 1 Corinthians 3:16

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

NRSVUE

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon answers

Alma 46:12–13, 21

And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. … And he prayed … for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 42:40–41

And again, thou shalt not be proud in thy heart; let all thy garments be plain, and their beauty the beauty of the work of thine own hands; And let all things be done in cleanliness before me.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Exodus 28 and early Christian white garments

He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.

Israel’s priests wore consecrated clothing. Revelation promises white raiment to the faithful. Baptismal garments in the early church were not a punchline. Mocking the temple garment as ‘magic underwear’ is a refusal to read the Bible’s own wardrobe.

Garments

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Members who receive the endowment make a covenant to wear the garment as instructed. It is a personal reminder of the Savior, of chastity, of the temple, and of a life set apart. It is not a lucky charm. It is not for display. Outsiders who fixate on fabric are standing outside a covenant they have not made and then complaining that they do not understand it.

Church members who have been clothed with the garment in a temple have taken upon themselves a covenant obligation to wear it according to the instructions given in the endowment.

  • Sacred clothing is biblical; ridicule is not an argument.
  • Modesty grows out of discipleship and the garment, not from shaming bodies.
  • How the garment is worn is a matter between the member, the Lord, and current instruction—not internet rules.
