“No Archaeological Evidence”

Why hasn’t archaeology proved the Book of Mormon?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Hebrews 11:1

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

NRSVUE

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Our explanation

They demand a Nephite passport. Faith is evidence of things not seen — and the Bible’s dirt is still catching up too.

How we read it

They demand a Nephite passport. Faith is evidence of things not seen — and the Bible’s dirt is still catching up too. Keep reading. The rest of the Bible is still in the room.

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon answers

Ether 1:1–2

And now I, Moroni, proceed to give an account of those ancient inhabitants who were destroyed by the hand of the Lord upon the face of this north country.

Our explanation

The record of those who were destroyed. A book can be the evidence while the cities are still in the jungle.

Archaeology and the Book of Mormon

FAIR Latter-day Saints

The 'no evidence' slogan assumes we should have Hebrew inscriptions on every stela. Mesoamerican texts are mostly royal and later; perishable books burn; names shift in translation. The right comparison is early Israel in Canaan — also thin on the ground — not a tourist plaque. Faith is still the appointed way to know the book is true. Archaeology is allowed to be a friend without being a substitute for Moroni.

Absence of a museum label is not the same as a refutation. Most of the ancient world has no museum label.

  • Biblical archaeology is also fragmentary for the relevant centuries.
  • Several former anachronisms have inverted.
  • The spiritual promise in Moroni 10 remains the primary epistemology.
