Is the Book of Mormon a real ancient record, or a nineteenth-century invention?
The Restoration presents the Book of Mormon as a genuine ancient record, translated by gift and power of God. Internal Hebrew structures, Old World geography, and a growing web of convergences are what we would expect of a real text — not a frontier novel.
Open answersDoes Native American DNA disprove Lehi’s family?
The Book of Mormon never claimed that every Native American descends only from Lehi. A small immigrant party entering an already-populated land leaves almost no detectable Middle Eastern Y-chromosome or mtDNA after 2,600 years.
Open answersDon’t horses, steel, and wheat prove the Book of Mormon is modern?
Translation language is not a photograph. Joseph rendered an ancient record into the biblical English he knew. Loan-shift (calling a familiar animal 'horse'), perishable materials, and incomplete archaeology leave the 'anachronism' list much shorter than critics advertise.
Open answersDid he use the Urim and Thummim? Did he use a seer stone? Both? Do any of those options disqualify Joseph as a prophet — or the Book of Mormon as scripture?
A rock in a hat could be revelation. God reveals how He chooses. Many first-hand sources say Joseph used only the Urim and Thummim found with the plates. Some later accounts say he also used a seer stone in a hat. Nobody should have a problem with either — or both.
Open answersIs 'reformed Egyptian' a made-up language?
Nephi says he wrote in a compact Egyptian script adapted ('reformed') to Hebrew thought. Mixed scripts and adapted Egyptian are well attested among Israelites who lived in Egyptian worlds.
Open answersDoes chiasmus in the Book of Mormon actually matter?
John W. Welch’s discovery of chiasmus — especially Alma 36 — showed that the Book of Mormon carries extended Hebrew literary forms Joseph was not trained to produce. One pattern does not 'prove' a book, but a dense harvest of them is what we expect from an ancient Semitic record.
Open answersIs Nahom a real place on Lehi’s trail?
1 Nephi says Ishmael was buried at Nahom, then the party turned east and reached a lush coastal Bountiful. In Yemen, NHM appears as a tribal/place name in the right region, with eastward turns toward fertile coasts — a specific hit, not a guess.
Open answersHow could a handful of people fill two continents?
They didn’t. A limited geography — a real, bounded land with other peoples already there — is the reading that fits the text, the wars, and the DNA essay. Hemispheric readings were popular, not revealed.
Open answersIf the Book of Mormon is ancient, why does it sound like the King James Bible?
God gave a Bible-soaked people a Bible-voiced translation. Where the plates quoted Isaiah, the English often tracks the KJV the Saints already trusted — then quietly corrects or expands it. That is how a revealed translation talks to its first audience.
Open answersHow can Nephi quote Isaiah chapters scholars date after 600 BC?
The 'two Isaiahs' theory is a modern critical reconstruction, not a recovered ancient fact. A believing reading keeps one Isaiah, sees prophecy as real, and notes that the brass plates could carry more of Isaiah than later Jewish canonization preserved under that name.
Open answersWere there really gold plates, or was it all visionary?
The plates were hefted, turned, and shown. Metal records are an ancient Near Eastern and Mesoamerican fact. The Eight Witnesses handled a physical object; the Three saw it by the power of God. Those are two kinds of witness, both stubborn.
Open answersWere the plates too small to fit the Book of Mormon — or too heavy to be carried?
The Book of Mormon already says the plates were a tight fit, which is why they used a compact script. Witnesses put the stack at about 40–60 pounds — not the 200 of solid gold. Josh Coates’s math, and Neal and Jasmin Rappleye’s comparisons, show the unsealed leaves can hold the text.
