Why are there several First Vision accounts that differ in detail?
Paul told his conversion more than once, with shifting details. Joseph did the same. The core never moves: he saw God, was forgiven, and was told not to join the churches of his day.
Open answersHow can a prophet practice plural marriage, including sealings that trouble modern readers?
Plural marriage was a revealed Abrahamic trial, lived unevenly by imperfect people, and formally ended by revelation. We do not have to find it easy to believe it was commanded.
Open answersDoes Mountain Meadows prove that the Church is violent at its core?
Local Latter-day Saints and some Paiute allies murdered an emigrant company in 1857. It was a horrific crime. The Church has condemned it. A war panic does not make a gospel of blood.
Open answersWho was the rightful successor after Joseph Smith was killed?
The Twelve held the keys. At the August 8 meeting the Saints recognized that authority — many testified that Brigham spoke with Joseph’s mantle. Splinter groups followed other claims; the keys stayed with the apostles.
Open answersHow can the Book of Abraham be scripture if the papyri look like ordinary funeral texts?
Joseph bought two papyrus rolls plus other Egyptian pieces. Witnesses saw a long Abraham roll. Most of that collection burned in Chicago in 1871. The 1967 fragments are short funerary texts — not the whole library he had. The Church’s essay already said so.
Open answersDid Joseph Smith fall for a forged set of plates?
The Kinderhook plates were a nineteenth-century hoax. Joseph never canonized a translation of them. A brief attempt to 'make out' a character is not the Book of Mormon all over again — and the contrast actually helps: when God gave plates, witnesses and a book followed.
Open answersDoes Joseph’s treasure-digging youth destroy his prophetic call?
Joseph grew up in a world that still believed unseen things could be found by gift. The Lord took a village seer and made a prophet. Samuel heard God in the night before he understood the office. Beginnings are allowed to be rustic.
Open answersWhy was the priesthood restoration documented later than some expect?
Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood came by angelic hands in 1829. Early records are brief because the Saints were living it, not archiving it. The ordinances, the keys, and D&C 13 and 27 are the trail.
Open answersDid Joseph Smith copy the temple from the Masons?
Joseph was a Mason, and some Nauvoo presentation forms overlap. The endowment’s content — creation, fall, covenant, priesthood clothing, king-and-priest — is Moses, not a lodge manual. God can use a familiar teaching language to restore an older temple.
Open answersWas Joseph’s relationship with Fanny Alger an affair?
Later Saints remembered Fanny Alger as an early plural wife, not as a mistress. The records are thin and secondhand. Faithful history refuses both scandal-sheet certainty and airbrushed silence: Joseph began living D&C 132 before it was written, and it cost him.
Open answersWas the Kirtland bank a prophet’s scam?
The Safety Society failed in a national panic. Joseph was a poor banker and a true prophet. Saints who confused the two left; Saints who did not stayed for the temple blessings already given in Kirtland.
Open answersWas Joseph Smith a fallen tyrant killed in a gunfight, or a martyr?
Joseph fired a pistol in Carthage jail in defense of friends. He still died because he would not abandon the work or the people who were in that jail with him. Christians have long called that martyrdom.
