Kirtland Safety Society

FAIR Latter-day Saints

1837 wrecked banks across America. The Safety Society was undercapitalized, legally awkward, and launched in hope of building Zion’s economy. Failure produced bitter apostasy — which is a sad commentary on using a balance sheet as a testimony. The Kirtland endowment of 1836 remains the more important ledger.

A prophet may misjudge a bank. He did not misjudge the Lord who filled that temple.

  • The 1837 panic was national, not uniquely Mormon.
  • Joseph lost money too; this is not a prosperity con.
  • Temple manifestations in Kirtland are the historical center of gravity.
