Joseph Smith’s Prophecies That Came True

If Deuteronomy 18 is the test, why do critics only count the hard ones and never the ones that landed?

Bible

They quote this

Bible · Deuteronomy 18:21–22

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

NRSVUE

You may say to yourself, “How can we recognize a word that the LORD has not spoken?” If a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it.

Our explanation

They quote the miss test and hide the hits. The same Bible has a pass test.

How we read it

They quote the miss test and hide the hits. The same Bible has a pass test. Keep reading. The rest of the Bible is still in the room.

The Bible answers

Bible · Jeremiah 28:9

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.

NRSVUE

As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.

Our explanation

When the word comes to pass, then shall the prophet be known. That is the column they leave blank.

Bible · Amos 3:7

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

NRSVUE

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.

Our explanation

He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets. D&C 87 is that method, dated.

Bible · Matthew 7:16–18

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

NRSVUE

You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.

Our explanation

By their fruits. A people in the Rockies still talking of Christ is not a thorn bush.

Modern Revelation

Joseph Smith—History 1:33

He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people.

Our explanation

Name had for good and evil among all nations. 1823. Look at the internet. It’s done.

Doctrine and Covenants 87:1–4

Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls; And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain… And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.

Our explanation

South Carolina, North vs South, Britain called, slaves rise. Christmas 1832. Fort Sumter 1861.

Doctrine and Covenants 118:4–5

And next spring let them depart to go over the great waters, and there promulgate my gospel, the fulness thereof, and bear record of my name. Let them take leave of my saints in the city of Far West, on the twenty-sixth day of April next, on the building-spot of my house, saith the Lord.

Our explanation

Far West temple lot, 26 April 1839 — after they had been driven. They went back at dawn and did it.

History of the Church 5:85 (6 August 1842)

I prophesied that the Saints would continue to suffer much affliction and would be driven to the Rocky Mountains, many would apostatize, others would be put to death by our persecutors or lose their lives in consequence of exposure or disease, and some of you will live to go and assist in making settlements and build cities and see the Saints become a mighty people in the midst of the Rocky Mountains.

Our explanation

Driven to the Rocky Mountains, a mighty people there. 1847 arrived. The people is still there.

Joseph Smith to Stephen A. Douglas, 18 May 1843 (William Clayton)

Judge, you will aspire to the presidency of the United States; and if you ever turn your hand against me or the Latter-day Saints, you will feel the weight of the hand of the Almighty upon you; and you and your friends will be as powerless as the winds.

Our explanation

You will aspire to the presidency; if you turn on the Saints you will fall. He ran in 1860. He had turned. He fell.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

Jeremiah 28:9 next to Deuteronomy 18:22 — Israel counted both sides

A prophet is not known only when a word fails. Jeremiah said a prophet is known when the word comes to pass. Deuteronomy 18 is a real test. A spreadsheet that hides the hits is not that test.

Jonah, Jeremiah 18, and Matthew 24 already refuse a stopwatch that only runs on Joseph. This page is the other column the list-makers leave blank.

FAIR

Joseph Smith’s Civil War prophecy — and the hits they skip

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Start with what is on paper. Christmas Day 1832: D&C 87 names a rebellion beginning in South Carolina, Southern States divided against Northern, Great Britain called on, slaves rising, death and misery of many souls. April 1861: Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Britain came within a letter of recognizing the Confederacy. That is not a weather report you could have copied off a New York editorial in 1832 as a twenty-six-year-old in Kirtland. Moroni’s 1823 line is finished: Joseph’s name is had for good and evil in every nation that has a comment box. August 1842: driven to the Rocky Mountains, a mighty people there — 1847 arrived, and the people is still there. May 1843: Stephen A. Douglas will aspire to the presidency; if he turns on the Saints he will fall. He ran in 1860, had already turned on them in the late 1850s, lost, and died in 1861. 26 April 1839: apostles were to take leave on the Far West temple lot after the Saints had been expelled. They went back at dawn and did it. Night before Carthage: Joseph told Dan Jones he would not die there and would yet see Wales. Jones lived and filled Wales with the gospel. None of this is the White Horse Prophecy. None of it is a blog about cars. It is the documented column Deuteronomy 18 also requires.

A prophet is not false because you refuse to count his hits. Jeremiah 28:9 is still in their Bible.

  • JSH 1:33: name had for good and evil among all nations. Every anti-Mormon site is unpaid fulfillment.
  • D&C 87 (1832): South Carolina, North vs South, Britain called, slaves rise. 1861 did not surprise the revelation.
  • Rocky Mountains (1842): driven, some dead, a mighty people in the midst of the mountains. 1847–present.
  • Stephen A. Douglas (1843): presidency, then the weight of that hand. 1860–61.
  • D&C 118: Far West, 26 April 1839, on the temple lot — after they had been driven. They still showed up.
  • The hard list (Independence temple, 1891, Patten) lives on the failed-prophecies page. Jonah lives there too. Count both columns.

Doctrine and Covenants 87 — Revelations in Context

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The section heading is not shy: given 25 December 1832, concerning wars that would shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina. Nullification had already made South Carolina a fuse. Joseph did not invent the fuse. He named what the fuse would become: a war between the states, other nations called, a slaughter. Eighteen-thirty-two is not 1861. A man can smell smoke. Naming the house that burns, the two families that fight, and the neighbor they call is another thing. The Church publishes the text. Critics quote Deuteronomy 18 and skip the section.

The revelation is still in the book. Fort Sumter is still in South Carolina. The test they cite has a second verse in Jeremiah.

  • The Civil War hit is specific enough that critics have to re-date it, shrink it, or change the subject.
  • Amos 3:7: God warns. He did.
  • Matthew 7: the fruit is a people still talking of Christ in those mountains.
