Objection 13 of 21

First Vision accounts

Paul told Damascus more than once. Joseph did too. The core never moves: he saw God and was called.

The objection

The First Vision accounts contradict. He made it up later.

  • What they say

“There are nine versions. Sometimes one personage, sometimes two. He didn’t even tell anyone for years.”

From the Bible

They say

Different versions mean he invented it.

Acts 9, 22, and 26 do not match in detail. Luke was not covering a fraud. He was retelling a call. Harmony is a prosecutor’s demand, not scripture’s. The Church’s First Vision essay says the same about Joseph: consistent story, different emphasis.

  • Acts 9:3–6

KJV · Suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven… Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

NRSVUE · Suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him… ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’

From the Book of Mormon

They say

The Book of Mormon never mentions it, so it didn’t happen.

The First Vision is not in the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith—History is. 1 Nephi 1 and 3 Nephi 11 already show the pattern: light, a voice, a commissioned prophet. Absence from one book is not disproof of another.

  • 1 Nephi 1:8–9

He thought he saw God sitting upon his throne… and he saw One descending… and twelve others following him.

From modern revelation

They say

1832 has one personage. 1838 has two. He upgraded the story.

The Church publishes 1832, 1835, 1838, and 1842 on its own site. 1838 is the canonized account. None of them deny that Joseph saw God and was told not to join the churches of his day. Different emphasis is not proof of a lie. FAIR’s First Vision page walks the details.

  • Joseph Smith—History 1:16–19

I saw a pillar of light… I saw two Personages… This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! … I was answered that I must join none of them.

From faithful sources

They say

He didn’t tell anyone for years — classic late invention.

Read the essay. It already answers when he told what, and why later accounts emphasize the Father and the Son. Then teach the 1838 account. If they bring other accounts: ‘The Church publishes those. Paul told his vision more than once too.’

From Preach My Gospel

Lesson 1 — The First Vision

“Joseph Smith saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. That vision began the Restoration.”

Tell the 1838 account. If they bring other accounts, the Church already published them. Invite Joseph Smith—History.
