Objection 11 of 21

Joseph Smith a false prophet

Deuteronomy 18 has two sides. Count the hits. Character smears are not the biblical test.

The objection

Joseph Smith was a false prophet, a deceiver, a fraud — failed prophecies, bad character, treasure digging.

  • They quote · Deuteronomy 18:22

“When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not… the LORD hath not spoken.”

From the Bible

They say

Deuteronomy 18:22 — one miss and he’s false.

Deuteronomy 18 is real. So is Jeremiah 28:9: a prophet is also known when the word comes to pass. Jonah’s forty days did not fall. Matthew 24’s ‘this generation’ still troubles creedal charts. They keep those prophets. Then one spreadsheet ends Joseph. FAIR and Church History Topics both list the hits they skip — including D&C 87 and a name had for good and evil in every nation.

  • Jeremiah 28:9

KJV · When the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.

NRSVUE · When the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.

  • Matthew 7:16–18

KJV · Ye shall know them by their fruits.

NRSVUE · You will know them by their fruits.

From the Book of Mormon

They say

A fraud produced your book.

The fruit is a book that talks of Christ like 2 Nephi 25 and 3 Nephi 11. Moroni 10 is the test Joseph actually gave: read, then ask God. Character smears skip the fruit. Deuteronomy never said ‘google his neighbors.’

  • Moroni 10:4–5

Ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true… he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

From modern revelation

They say

Treasure digging and seer stones — folk magician, not a prophet.

The Church already published the seer stone and the treasure-seeking. Folk practice baptized into a prophetic gift is not Deuteronomy 18. D&C 87 named South Carolina and a North–South war in 1832. Joseph Smith—History 1:33 named a global reputation in 1823. Count both columns.

  • Joseph Smith—History 1:33

He called me by name… and said… that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 87:1–3

Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina… the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States.

From faithful sources

From Preach My Gospel

Lesson 1 — Joseph Smith

“Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. Through him, Jesus Christ restored His gospel and Church.”

Teach the First Vision and the Book of Mormon as the signs of the call. If they open Deuteronomy 18, open Jeremiah 28:9 and D&C 87.
