The “Cult” Accusation

Is the Church a cult?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · John 8:31–32

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

NRSVUE

If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

Our explanation

Continue in my word. The truth shall make you free. Cults hide books. We publish them.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 134:2; 58:27–28

We believe that no government can exist in peace, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the free exercise of conscience… Men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will.

Our explanation

Free exercise. Men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause. Not a compound.

FAIR

The cult label

FAIR Latter-day Saints

Sociologists who study new religious movements do not use 'cult' the way counter-cult ministries do. Latter-day Saints serve in the military, run businesses, hold public office, publish their finances’ sacred purpose, and send teenagers into the world as missionaries. High demand is not the same as coercion. The Book of Mormon itself condemns priestcraft and secret combinations.

If a church publishes its scriptures, names its prophets, and lets you walk out the door, it is not a cult. It is a church you disagree with.

  • Agency is doctrine, not a brochure.
  • 'Cult' in anti-Mormon use just means 'not my denomination.'
  • Temple covenants are entered, not inflicted.
