Faith Crisis and Mental Health

What should a Latter-day Saint do with crushing doubt, anxiety, or depression—leave, pretend, or seek both the Lord and sound help?

Bible

The Bible answers

Bible · Mark 9:24

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

NRSVUE

Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Our explanation

Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. Doubt is a prayer request, not a verdict.

Bible · Psalm 42:11

KJV + NRSVUE

King James Version

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

NRSVUE

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon answers

Alma 32:21, 27

Faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true. … Even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

Modern Revelation

Doctrine and Covenants 6:36

Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

Ancient witnesses

Dead Sea Scrolls and related extra-biblical texts that illuminate the same pattern the Restoration restores.

1QH (Hodayot / Thanksgiving Hymns)

I thank you, O Lord, for you have placed my soul in the bundle of the living and have hedged me about against all the snares of the pit.

The Teacher of Righteousness at Qumran prayed from anguish, not from a pose of unbroken certainty. Israel’s Psalter is full of disquieted souls. A faith crisis is not automatically apostasy, and a depressed Saint is not a failed testimony.

Questions, faith, and care of the soul

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Restoration does not require a frozen smile. It requires an honest experiment upon the word. Questions should be taken to the Lord, to scripture, to the Gospel Topics essays, and to people who actually believe. Depression and anxiety are medical and spiritual realities; prayer is commanded, and so is wisdom. Bishops can help with the spiritual and the practical. They are not a replacement for a physician or a counselor when those are needed.

Faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things. The Lord works with desire, with seeds, and with those who still look up.

  • Doubt is not a identity; it is a condition to be worked through with Christ.
  • Mental health care is compatible with priesthood blessings, not a rival religion.
  • A diet of only hostile sources is not ‘research.’ Read the essays, the scriptures, and believing scholars too.

Many who leave do so after a compressed list of shock claims, not after a patient reading of the Church’s own essays and the best faithful work. Others stay but suffer in silence. Both patterns are unnecessary. The restored gospel can bear inspection. A wounded mind deserves treatment. Neither is served by pretending that every hard question is a deal-breaker or that every sad Saint simply lacks faith.

You can bring the Lord an unfinished testimony. You cannot outsource your discipleship to the loudest thread.

  • Alma 32 is a method: plant, nourish, not rip the seed up weekly.
  • Community matters. Isolation plus a search bar is how crises ferment.
  • Austin Fife’s Light and Truth Letter is a free walk through the same CES stack, from someone who already took the dark tour.
