Objection 19 of 21

Burning in the bosom / testimony

The Spirit is not vs. evidence. Luke 24 already had hearts that burned while scripture opened. Moroni 10 is James 1 with a book in hand.

The objection

You tell people to pray until they feel a burning. That’s subjective. Scripture alone is the test. The heart is deceitful.

  • They quote · Jeremiah 17:9

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.”

  • They quote · Doctrine and Covenants 9:8

“You must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you.”

From the Bible

They say

Jeremiah 17:9 — you can’t trust a feeling. Sola scriptura is the test.

Jeremiah 17:9 is about rebellious Judah, not a ban on the Holy Ghost. Luke 24:32: the disciples’ hearts burned while He opened the scriptures. James 1:5: ask God. 1 Corinthians 2:14: spiritual things are spiritually understood. The Bible itself tells you to seek the Spirit, not only the printed page.

  • Luke 24:32

KJV · Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

NRSVUE · Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?

  • James 1:5

KJV · If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally.

NRSVUE · If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly.

From the Book of Mormon

They say

Moroni 10 is ‘pray until you feel it.’ That’s a cult close.

Moroni 10:3–5: remember mercy, read, ponder, ask with real intent. D&C 9:7–9: study it out first — ‘you took no thought save it was to ask me’ is the rebuke. We never taught ‘skip the book, chase a tingle.’ FAIR’s burning-bosom page is study plus Spirit, not vs. evidence.

  • Moroni 10:3–5

Remember how merciful the Lord hath been… ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things… ask God… if these things are not true… he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

From modern revelation

They say

D&C 9:8 is a burning in the chest. That’s not how God speaks.

D&C 8:2–3: mind and heart. D&C 9:7–9: study, then ask; you shall feel that it is right. Preach My Gospel chapter 4: help people recognize the Spirit while they study. Do not ask them to chase a feeling. Invite them to read, ponder, pray, and act.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 8:2–3

I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost… Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 9:7–9

You must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.

From faithful sources

They say

Every religion has a feeling. That’s not evidence.

Every Christian who has prayed for the Spirit to confirm a verse already uses that way of knowing. They will not allow Moroni 10 to use it. FAIR’s Q&A is the page to hand them. Then Luke 24 and James 1:5.

From Preach My Gospel

Recognize the Spirit + Moroni’s promise

“The Holy Ghost testifies of truth. Help people recognize the Spirit as they read, pray, and keep commandments. Moroni 10:3–5 is the invitation.”

Do not ask them to chase a feeling. Invite them to read, ponder, pray, and act. Luke 24 is the Bible verse. James 1:5 is the First Vision’s verse. Moroni 10 is the Book of Mormon’s.
